SIXTH ANNUAL SURF AND SNOW IN THE SOUTH

The Sixth Annual Peak to Porridge is set for a stunning session with the Boardercross course at the Remarkables looking stunning with fresh spring snow. Local terrain park guru Billy Taylor says the "Park Bully" a snow grooming machine especially designed for building terrain parks has made a huge impact on the design and maintenance of the boardercross course "competitors and the public love the fast technical nature of the course with heaps of features including table tops, rollers and berms" said Billy.

Last years Primo Peak to Porridge competition proved to be an enormous success with local and international competitors raving about the sublime surf in howling equinox so'westerlies and a 5 metre swell! "A whole bunch of relaxed competitors and unofficials that had a ball" says organiser Evan Bloomfield.

Starting at the Remarkables with a Boardercross then heading to the infamous South Coast surf spot Porridge this is a classic end of season event where everyone can relax a bit and enjoy the mountain and sea environment without the high anxiety of performance pressure. A chance to get on in, get involved and slide the way through the end of season with some spring snow in the hills and a classic southland surf session.

A field of about 40 competitors are expected to race it out on The Remarkables on Friday 19 September. Many of them then race down to Riverton to do the "snow and surf in a day double". "With surf only two hours from the snow and the lingering spring evenings that's entirely achievable" says Evan.

Porridge, which is just out of Riverton is the venue for the surfing leg of the competition on Saturday the 20th of September. The overall title is determined by adding the points from the boarder cross and surfing competitions.

Entry forms are available at The Fridge in Invercargill, Small Planet in Queenstown, Boardbase in Dunedin, the Remarkables on the day or online. All online entries go in the draw to win their entry fee back.

Year 2002

Huey Turns it on for a Classic South Coast Surf Session

Once again the weather played in to the hands of competitors in the Primo Peak to Porridge with three to four foot waves and a clean offshore wind. As the day progressed conditions just improved and by the end of the surfing leg of this combined competition there were smiles all round with some paddle weary arms and sun tanned faces.

In the women's the boardercross results from Friday were reversed with Jess Terrill from Taranaki showing good wave selection and clean powerful style to take out first place. Kath Doer struggled to pick up any quality waves and was second with the youngest competitor 13 year old Pae Pou showing a promising style taking third.

Local knowledge played a big part in the surfing for the men's with Riverton surfer Haami Pou picking off some excellent waves and surfing aggressively in the pocket to take first place. Joe Kain with the longest wave of the day and Joe Summerlee with the best floater of the day placed second and third respectively.

The combined winners were calculated by adding the results from the Boardercross and Surfing events. A tenth place in the boardercross was good enough for Haami Pou to take out the Men's while Kath Doer and Jess Terrill placed first equal in the women's.
